A slim golden fountain pen, that’s all that Neal has left of Kate.
He picks it up, every day when he comes home, and remembers how it looked in her hands, how the metal shone in the light of her favorite candle. He just holds it, letting it absorb the warmth of his hand until he can pretend that it’s her skin that warmed it. That she has just put it down.
When he can’t bear it anymore, when there are too many memories swirling in his head, he sets the tip on the paper of her diary and writes a single sentence.
