Peter watches the wick of the candle catch fire. The bright flare, the first second that the candle burns, the slowly melting wax at the top, the gentle sway of the flame to the rhythm of his own breath; all these things, that normally are insignificant, threaten to overwhelm him now.
He holds himself as still as he can, takes only shallow breaths so the candle that Neal has placed on his chest isn’t disturbed.
“You don’t trust me, Peter.” Neal’s fingertips ghost over Peter’s forehead, and down the side of his face, feeling stubble and the clenching jaw muscles underneath Peter’s skin. “That is intolerable in our situation.”
From the edge of his jaw, Neal strokes his hands along the length of Peter’s throat, a slow pressure, that Peter realizes doesn’t feel threatening at all, and that does scare him a little. Neal’s hands don’t steal his breath, though; they just make him more aware of it, and in response make him draw more air into his lungs.
Up and down, the candle moves with his chest. Breathing in, breathing out, breathing in; Neal’s hands adapt the same rhythm that Peter’s entire world seems to have fallen prey to. They rub a knot out of his shoulder muscles, it is sweet agony that makes Peter groan, and they follow the expanse of skin up his arms until they meet the silk tie binding the wrists together. “I have to trust you, Peter. I don’t have a choice.”
Neal’s eyes aren’t blue in the candle light, but his gaze is still intense, is burning so hot that Peter almost thinks he himself might be catching fire from it. He is captivated, and he doesn’t look away, even when Neal reaches for the candle.
“Now you have to trust me, Peter.”
