The grip on his arm is so tight it feels as though it will bruise to the bone. It’s a way to mark him, Neal figures, a way to make sure that even when he runs again, he won’t be able to shake off Peter’s hand that easily.
“You shouldn’t have run, Neal.”
Neal laughs, bitter and a little crazy. “Why, because you wanted me to stay so bad?” He shakes his head.“Because you trusted my word so very fucking much? Yeah— you know what Peter? Fuck you! Fuck you and your fucking rules and your fucking ‘I trust you to do the right thing, Neal. I trust you to do what I say!’”
Peter’s fingers tighten. A small patch of Neal’s skin is pinched between Peter’s forefinger and his thumb and Neal takes the hurt and feeds it to his anger.
“I’m done with this shit, and I’m not going to live to your rules anymore.”
He twists out of Peter’s hold and walks away, leaves Peter standing alone in the tiny gallery where he’s been waiting every day for a week, where he’s been planning this confrontation for even longer.
A Clean Break. Just like he’d wanted it. And it hurts.
