“I want you to have this.” Neal presses a thick off-white envelope into Peter’s hand and wraps his fingers around it.
Peter closes his eyes and shakes his head but doesn’t fight Neal’s words anymore. He is tired, Neal knows, of trying to get him to stay, tired of failing.
He strokes a finger over Peter’s knuckles, just off the place where the edge of the paper almost cuts into Peter’s skin and guides the hand to his mouth, kissing in gently and then resting his forehead against the back of it; he’s kneeling and a fold in his trouser’s is digging uncomfortably into the nerve below his kneecap but he doesn’t shift, doesn’t fidget.
He simply stays still and concentrates all of his senses on this single moment. He breathes in the smell of the linoleum floor and of the detergent and of Peter’s soap and doesn’t think about a day where he can’t do this, a day where he can’t get on his knees in front of Peter and burrow his face in his lover’s clothes to smother everything else around him in the scents and the sounds and all the other little things that together make up Peter, because quite honestly, it’s horrifying, this prospect of being free.
Paper rustles, and Neal concentrates on that so he doesn’t have to hear the soft snicks that Peter’s watch makes when it counts down the seconds to what will be the end of his time with Peter.
Tomorrow at this time he’ll be long gone from New York. He’ll leave behind his entire life. He’ll leave behind Peter and Elizabeth. And he’ll leave behind a thick off-white envelope. There’s nothing in it but a diamond, reported missing sixteen years ago.
Neal hopes it will be the beginning of a new chase.
